APPEAL TO THE PORTUGUESE PEOPLE
The Lithuanian Parliamentary Group on Development Cooperation, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights encourages the Portuguese people to take part in a historic referendum on 11 February 2007 and vote for the legal abortion, for women‘s right to plan their family life, for women‘s right to have the possibility to choose a safe abortion in case of unwanted pregnancy. In Lithuania as a Soviet Republic abortion was legalized in 1955. After Lithuania regained independence, on January 28 1994 the abortion right till 12 weeks of pregnancy was confirmed by the Act of Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania.
The Lithuanian Parliamentary Group, supporting the right of legal abortion, pays much attention to sexual education, backs up the idea of good access to contraception, the right of young people to get all possible information on safe sexual life, friendly health service and stresses the responsibility of both partners in sexual relationship.
The Lithuanian Parliamentary Group on Development Cooperation, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights urges the Portugeese people to respect women‘s human right in making conscious decision to choose legal abortion, which saves women‘s lives and allows women to determine their own future.
